VW Key Fob Battery Replacement

Key with key fob in hand
These days, almost every vehicle on the Kansas City roads comes with a battery-powered key fob rather than a traditional car key. This key fob is essential to unlocking and running your vehicle, so it’s understandable to get worried if it suddenly stops working! There’s no need for concern, though — it’s likely the result of a dead battery.

While the battery in your Volkswagen key fob is designed to be durable and long-lasting, it’s still a battery, and therefore it’ll eventually run out of charge and need to be replaced. Fortunately, the process of replacing the battery in a VW key fob is relatively straightforward as long as you follow the correct steps. The service team at Volkswagen of Topeka has put together a guide outlining the details of a VW key fob battery replacement, so you can easily take care of it from home.

How to Replace Your VW Key Fob Battery

The first thing you’ll want to do if your VW key fob battery dies is determine what kind of battery you need and gather the necessary supplies. There are two types of VW key fob batteries: CR1632 and CR2032. CR1632 batteries are really only used on older Volkswagen models made before 1999, so it’s likely that your vehicle uses a CR2032.

The materials you’ll need for a successful VW key fob battery replacement are a new battery, a small piece of tape, and a small flathead screwdriver. Wrap the tape around the flathead screwdriver so you don’t accidentally damage the delicate mechanics of the key fob, then just follow these instructions:

  1. Pop out the emergency key inside your Volkswagen key fob by holding the button down. This key will be able to unlock and power your vehicle even if the key fob battery is dead.
  2. Keep a firm grip on the key fob or connect it to a small metal key ring that you hold in your index finger—you don’t want to accidentally drop it!
  3. There’s a small seam between the lid and the base of the key fob. Carefully insert the flathead screwdriver into the seam and gently pry the lid apart from the base. Take care not to accidentally scratch the inside of the key fob, as it’s very delicate.
  4. Take out the dead battery and replace it with the new one, making sure that the positive side is facing downward.
  5. Replace the lid and tightly close the remote case. You’re all set!
