Closeup of Tire Numbers with Wheel Rim

Each tire on your vehicle is embedded with a long string of numbers and letters, and they probably look like gibberish at first glance. But in reality, you’ll find a great deal of meaning behind every digit! So what do the numbers on tires mean? These numbers tell you everything from the size of the tire to the thickness of the sidewalls and even the speed limitations of the materials. If you want to take a deep dive into tire number meanings, Volkswagen of Topeka is here with tips from our service center, so you can navigate Topeka with ease.

Determining Tire Number Meanings

What do tire numbers mean? The best way to understand tire number meaning is to use an example. In this case, we’ll use P215/65R15 95H.

Decoding “P”

Your tire number string will typically start with a letter. If it starts with a P, this stands for “P-Metric tire” or a passenger car. You might also see an LT for a light truck. If the tire starts with a number instead, that means it’s a European-style tire.

Decoding “215”

This number tells you the width of the tire, measured from one sidewall to the other sidewall. In this example, the tire is 215 millimeters from one sidewall to the other.

Decoding “65”

After a forward slash, you’ll see another set of numbers. This is the aspect ratio code – or the height of the tire’s cross-section relative to its width. This tire has an aspect ratio of 65%, so the height of the tire is equal to 65% of its width. Bigger aspect ratios mean thicker sidewalls.

Decoding “R”

This letter represents the type of construction used for the tire. In this case, the R stands for radial construction.

Decoding “15”

This number lets you know what wheel size is appropriate for that particular tire. This tire is embossed with “15”, which means a 15-inch wheel will fit perfectly.

Decoding “95H”

Finally, you’ll see the load index and speed rating. The load index tells you how much weight the tire can support, ranging from 75-105 for a passenger vehicle – or 95 for this example. The speed rating tells you how fast the tire can safely travel, based on its load capacity. The rating of H means the tire has a maximum speed of 130 mph.
